I have been taking minimalist photographs for many years: it started with berlin minimal. This was an absolutely successful series with great media coverage, cultural sponsorship, exhibitions and even the Bundeskunsthalle (Federal Art Gallery). The approach was to see familiar things in a new light and playfully overcome social contrasts – regardless of neighborhoods, origins or perspectives. The photographs thus became a visual dialog about perception, identity and the unifying power of aesthetics.
After a dormant phase of this particular perspective on the world, I took up this visual language again a few years ago and created münchen minimal and hamburg minimal respectively. I didn’t just do a simple rehash of berlin minimal, but modernized the series and adapted the colour scheme to the mood of the city as I perceive it. hamburg minimal more in yellowish-black tones, new york minimal and barcelona minimal more in reddish-black tones. berlin minimal was brownish-red with black and completely analog – the new series are digital.
Anyone who would like to admire the result now has the perfect opportunity to do so: the renowned Hamburg photo gallery VisuleX-Gallery for Photography is presenting 20 motifs from this series in various formats for the first time, all as part of the Hamburg Architecture Summer.
hamburg minimal also sees itself as an invitation to pause, take a closer look and discover your own surroundings with new eyes. Because there is a special power in leaving things out – the power to create harmony from opposites.
An interesting journey through the Hanseatic city awaits you – with joy, amazement and inspiration!
