berlin minimal

“I am certain that these images can provide their viewers with the most beautiful pleasure that art has in store for us: surprise, wonder, recognition, and a smile!” [Prof. Dr. Christoph Stölzl, then Vice President of the Berlin House of Representatives]

“The photo series berlin minimal succeeds in a fascinating way in offering a completely new perspective on the capital. I cordially invite you to embark on the artistic adventure berlin minimal. I am sure you will discover entirely new sides of the city of Berlin and see familiar things with different eyes.” [Hans Demant, then CEO of Adam Opel AG]

The minimalist view is apolitical and detached. Because it grants the viewer the necessary freedom for imagination and thought. berlin minimal adds another perspective to the many illustrated books, inventories, and observations. This perspective is neither touristically, politically, nor ideologically appropriable. It consciously ignores standards such as “beautiful” or “ugly”.

berlin minimal connects the individual districts of Berlin and overcomes contrasts. East or West, “poorer” or “richer” residential areas, known, unknown, or underestimated buildings, times, and eras. What divides is abolished and holds no significance. Because minimalism is a liberal way of looking at things.
At the same time, this view is an invitation: sharpen your own senses and rediscover the familiar!

berlin minimal was first presented to the public in Berlin in 2004 as part of a major exhibition. The speech was given by the then Berlin Senator for Culture, Prof. Dr. Christoph Stölzl. Furthermore, berlin minimal served as part of the PR campaign for the introduction of the Opel Tigra in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. The photo series subsequently captivated audiences in many cities, including the Bundeskunsthalle, the Kunstbahnhof in Kassel, and the Goethe-Institut in Budapest.
