City from Below

Places of surprise, places of beauty, no places of beauty. As if someone had suddenly turned off the sound or set the phone to “silent.” People expect noise—we are, after all, right in the middle of the city. However, the scene does not need any sound. It has its own frequency, after all.

This is “City from Below”: the photographs show the other sides of a city, beyond the tourist crowds and coffee-table-book aesthetics—the “special spice” of every city. No, it is not always beautiful. But it is real. Noise zones in silence and quiet zones in noise.

City from Below is an open photographic concept series and has existed since 1990. Open because new motifs are added every year: from as many countries as possible that the artist travels to. Open because cities change, their tone changes: darkness becomes light, calm becomes bustle, nature becomes concrete.

All photographs are analog shots.
